The dog, believed to be an XL Bully, was destroyed at the scene to 'ensure the safety of the public'
Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was fatally injured by a dog, believed to be an XL Bully, in Sunderland. A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Officers arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm. He was then re-arrested on suspicion of murder following the death. The 54-year-old man's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers. Police enquiries into the incident are still ongoing and officers will remain in the area.
