What Cianna Gonzalez, 24, experienced is called the Ferguson reflex, which is when the body ‘expels’ a baby. Also known as the fetal ejection reflex, it resulted in stay-at-home mum Cianna, from Philadelphia, feeling like her son was ‘descending’ without control. After a three-hour labour, the baby was caught by a midwife after he just slipped out.
But she quickly realised there was no time for that. Cianna said: ‘I was anxiety-ridden in the moment. ‘I thought who is going to catch this baby? It was very natural and very fast.’ She believes ‘being able to relax trigged the Ferguson reflex’, adding: ‘It was very intuitive on the baby’s end. It was incredible. ‘I didn’t know I could do that or the baby could. He was on his own timing.
