St. Louis police said four officers were hit by gunfire after protests that started peacefully Monday became violent overnight, as some smashed windows and stole items from businesses and fires burning in the downtown area.
On Monday afternoon, several hundred people rallied peacefully outside the justice center in downtown St. Louis, including Mayor Lyda Krewson and St. Louis Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards. Lombardo said officers were attempting to clear protesters from Las Vegas Boulevard when the officer was shot some time before midnight.A suspect in the shooting was arrested about 2:30 a.m. local time.guarding a federal building after he reached for his firearm at 11:22 p.m., the sheriff said. Lombardo said the man was an open-carry individual and was seen walking among protesters as the demonstration was dying down.
