Subway crime was top of mind Tuesday morning at a meeting after new numbers revealed assaults, stabbings, and arrests are all up this year.
NYPD Chief of Transit Jason Wilcox said at Monday's press briefing that there were no officers present in the ticket booth area of the station when the fight began.
The violence came just hours after the NYPD released data showing felony assaults are up 33% from 2021 and up more than 50% from last month."Assaults with objects, a stick, a cane, a hammer, are also up 48%. Many of these assault incidents have started as a dispute, a bump, a shove, a shoe stepped on, or an argument over a seat that then quickly escalated to violence," Wilcox said.
Lieber is calling for the surge in NYPD officers on the subway to continue long-term, while also proposing a revamp of the fight against fare evasion. "We may need those cops, that surge, that increase in police presence and numbers to continue for sometime," Lieber said."What we want all of us is to deter crime before it happens by keeping the bad actors out of the system in the first place," he said."It can discourage criminals from coming into our system.""Crime in the subway is directly connected to what's going on above ground," Lieber said."This is not an overnight process.
Lieber also saying as they come up with ways to fight fare evasion he's not interested in sending people to jail. He wants his plan to focus on fixing the turnstiles.
