Rishi Sunak, with several election losses under his belt and a mountain to climb in the polls, will not relish the thought of another campaign dominated by accusations of misconduct
In a speech, Rishi Sunak will say he is seeking to give the public the ‘peace of mind that we will keep you safe’ .
But the seat has not always been blue – it was won by Labour in the 1997 Blair landslide – and these days even a majority well into the thousands does not equate to a safe Tory seat. Despite him denying the allegations, Parliament’s independent conduct panel upheld an investigation that found he “verbally belittled, ridiculed, abused and humiliated” the employee, “repeatedly physically struck and threw things” and indecently exposed himself. The distressing nature of the details are worsened by the fact the staff member said they raised them with the Conservative Party long before any action was taken.
The poor handling of the incident and apparent disregard for the seriousness of the allegations has echoes of the Chris Pincher affair which, of course, was the beginning of the end of Mr Johnson’s premiership.
