Greater Manchester hospitals have been hit by a number of damning watchdog inspections of maternity units
Another Greater Manchester maternity service has been hit with criticism from health watchdogs amid a national investigation into maternity care. Tameside General Hospital’s maternity services have dropped from a ‘good’ to ‘requires improvement’ amid a ‘deterioration in the standard of care’, the Care Quality Commission has said.
READ MORE: Manchester's major maternity hospital issued immediate warning by watchdog in year of maternity care scandals Tameside General Hospital’s maternity services were inspected by the CQC as part of a national maternity inspection programme stemming from cases of serious harm and even fatalities of mothers and babies because of lacking maternity care across England spanning years. Greater Manchester has seen multiple reports from the CQC highlighting similar problems at other major maternity units in the region, including lack of senior staff, delays and telephone services.
Carolyn Jenkinson, deputy director of secondary and specialist healthcare, said: “When we inspected maternity services at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, we found staff who were skilled and were focused on the needs of women, people using the service and their babies. However, there was a deterioration in the standard of care being provided since we last inspected and leaders must now focus on making the necessary improvements.
