Everyone and their mother is giving to a House candidate in New Jersey whose campaign war chest was bolstered by a $2 million donation from his mother.
Garden State Advance, a super PAC formed in mid-March, received the donation from Ellen Healey, comprising almost 99% of the commission’s donations, on behalf of GOP candidate Bob Healey Jr. shortly after the fund was created. The only other donation was made by Jonathan Lumbert, who gave $25,000 to the PAC, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.
“At a time when families are struggling to pay bills, Bob Healey Jr. and his mom are throwing around millions of dollars to buy this seat,” said DCCC spokesman James Singer on Tuesday. “Healey and his family are making clear they want to push policies in Congress that will benefit his family and his stock portfolio over the needs of New Jersey working families.”
Healey won the GOP nomination for New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District last week and is set to face Democratic incumbent Rep. Andy Kim in November. Garden State Advance spent about $45,000 in the days leading up to the June 7 primary race, much of which went toward mailers and text messages in support of his campaign.
Healey’s personal campaign had roughly $437,420.74 cash on hand as of May 18, the most recent filing provided by the FEC showed. Comparatively, Kim has almost $4 million in cash on hand. The congressional district used to be considered heavily Republican, but Kim was able to oust his GOP challenger in 2018 by leaning on suburban backlash to then-President Donald Trump, a strategy he employed again in 2020.
