Afghanistan earthquake death toll jumps to more than 900 with at least 600 injured, authorities say

More than 900 people were killed and hundreds more wounded after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan Wednesday, according to an official from the country's disaster management authority.

It is the deadliest quake to hit the Asian nation in decades. The earthquake hit at 1.24 a.m. about 46 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost, which lies close to the country's border with Pakistan, according to the United States Geological Survey .The quake registered at a depth of 10 kilometers , according to USGS, which assigned the quake a yellow alert level -- indicating a relatively localized impact.
