Moon Knight's new costume may be terrifying, but his makeshift prison-break mask likely fulfills an important purpose. In the Marvel Universe, the police can't unmask superheroes, and they can even serve time incognito thanks to Daredevil's legal work.
After being imprisoned on the orders of the Kingpin of Crime, Moon Knight is sporting a new, improvised costume. While it may be not be impressive as his usual ivory-white sacraments, it does have one feature that's likely to prove essential, given the current state of Marvel's New York City and Wilson Fisk's war on heroes.
Having recently become the mayor of New York, Kingpin should be happier than ever. But despite his wedding to Typhoid Mary and an upcoming presidential bid, Wilson Fisk is being haunted by the fact that the true identity of Daredevil has somehow been erased from his memory. In response, Fisk has outlawed all superpowered individuals in New York, from Daredevil himself to the publicly beloved Fantastic Four.
Not long ago - during Charles Soule's run on Daredevil - Matt Murdock worked first as a prosecutor, then for the mayor's office, as part of a convoluted scheme to secure new rights for costumed vigilantes. Matt's focus was on allowing superheroes to engage with the legal system without surrendering their identities, and he was successful in making it so that they could testify in court and even have the right to remain masked while serving a prison sentence.
While Moon Knight's mask certainly isn't the standard orange covering seen recently in Daredevil, it's likely that covering his face has given Marc Spector the right to hide his identity in prison, as the police would have been specifically barred from unmasking him.
Different covers - such as that of the upcoming Devil's Reign: Moon Knight #1 - have used different designs for Marc's makeshift costume, presenting it as a cloth hood, but the wrappings shown in Devil's Reign #4 are particularly appropriate given his longtime links to Ancient Egyptian mythology Fans can see this dark new costume as Devil's Reign continues, and Moon Knight proves that even incarceration can't stop his mission of vengeance. .
