Oakland A’s starter Frankie Montas allowed two singles in eight innings, only to see the bullpen blow the game
OAKLAND – A’s starting pitcher Frankie Montas came within four outs of his first career no-hitter Thursday.After Montas allowed just two walks in seven sterling innings and battled to get through eight, the A’s bullpen crumbled in the ninth inning in what became an ugly 2-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners at the Coliseum.
“He came in and couldn’t find the zone,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “It’s uncharacteristic so far this year. He’s been throwing strikes. Unfortunately today, he couldn’t find the fastball.” The A’s were outscored 19-3 for the series and 26-8 on their 1-5 homestand. Their lone run Thursday came in the first inning, as a Christian Bethancourt single to left scored Sheldon Neuse from second base.“It’s baseball. Robbie did a great job, too,” Bethancourt said.
Montas’ bid for the 16th no-hitter in A’s franchise history was broken up by an opposite-field single to left field by Adam Frazier with two outs in the eighth inning.
