“No one has had a bolder vision for economic development than Richard Shelby,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said while honoring the retiring U.S. senator.

“Mobile is on a role,” Shelby said during the groundbreaking ceremony. “More than 300 years ago, the French came here and they sailed in here. Now they are flying out, aren’t they?” More could be on the way. Shelby, the Republican ranking member on the Appropriations Committee, is working to get an approximately $1.7 trillion federal government spending plan through before a December 16 funding deadline. He said he will be departing to Washington, D.C., soon to continue working on the spending package before Congress leaves for the Christmas holiday, and Shelby leaves Capitol Hill as a senator for the final time.
