Treasury Secretary Mnuchin says anyone who got a $1,200 stimulus check the first time will likely get one again for the same amount
, lawmakers appear to be nearing consensus with the White House about how to further aid the United States' ailing economy.
In an interview with CNBC Thursday morning, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the Republican bill to extend an extremely reduced level of federal unemployment income will also include a second $1,200 direct payment that's very similar to the one sent four months ago. President Trump — who has pushed a payroll tax cut in recent months despite little support from his own party — "wants to get money into people's pockets now because we need to reopen the economy," Mnuchin said.Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate have decried the $600 weekly unemployment bonus due to the fact that, for a small portion of workers, their monthly income increased due to the payments.
The last of those elevated checks will be sent out this week, despite the pandemic still raging in the United States. More than 70,000 new cases were reported Wednesday, with the death toll reaching over 142,000 as the country fails to mitigate its spread.
