In their battle to reduce 2020 player salaries during the coronavirus pandemic, MLB owners say they barely made money the past 10 years. Forbes shows profits have tripled
, but Liberty reported the Braves’ operating expenses—player costs are the biggest component—increased $75 million compared with 2018. Liberty highlights the “new spring training facilities” as one of the reasons for the massive expense increase., as my colleague Mike Ozanian has written. It’s 2008 all over again, and each MLB owner owns a dozen condos in the financial crisis but is struggling to meet their monthly mortgage payments.
Boras and the players argue the owners’ non-player spending has built valuable assets with their teams, regional sports networks , real estate developments and other businesses. Franchise values have quadrupled since 2010, to $1.85 billion from $491 million, by’ count. Even the worst-run organization in the sport, the Marlins, sold for $1.2 billion in 2017.
The back-and-forth between owners and players during a pandemic is turning the public against both sides. Baseball is in if it can’t find a solution to divvy up its billions. One person involved in the negotiations offered a bleak outlook when asked about a possible compromise: “It’s not looking good right now.”
