R'Bonney Gabriel - a fashion designer, model and sewing teacher from Texas - has become the first Filipino American to win Miss Universe.Women representing 84 different countries took part in the 71st Miss Universe competition, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Saturday.
The contest, which in the past has been labelled sexist, includes"personal statements, in depth interviews and various categories including evening gown and swimwear". Gabriel is a former high school volleyball player and graduate of the University of North Texas. A short bio on the organisation's website says she is also CEO of her own sustainable clothing line, R'Bonney Nola.
In the final stage Q&A, she was asked how she would demonstrate Miss Universe was"an empowering and progressive organisation" if she were to win. The 28-year-old spoke about using recycled materials in her fashion designs and teaching sewing to survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence.
