Sky News presenter Kay Burley tackled Gillian Keegan as she stumbles over Government plans to 'arrest homeless people for smelling excessively'. The cabinet minister admitted during the interview they 'should not be arrested just because they smell'.
The Government is mulling changes to proposed new laws following a backlash over claims they will see 'nuisance' rough sleepers arrested for the way they smell.
Downing Street yesterday said Mr Sunak did not believe people should be arrested 'just if they smell' - a view also shared by Education Secretary Gillian Keegan. Tory MPs are plotting a rebellion against new powers in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak 's Criminal Justice Bill, which have been branded 'completely unacceptable'
The Cabinet minister said she would support Government policy but told Sky News that people 'should not be arrested just if they smell'. A Number 10 spokeswoman said that the provisions addressing 'nuisance' rough sleeping in the Criminal Justice Bill were about 'getting rid of an outdated Vagrancy Act which criminalises people for being homeless'.
She added: 'The police will receive guidance that comes with these powers and we are very clear that the focus of what this is on protecting the public from harassment and intimidation, and there'll be the requisite guidance in line with that.' The Government has previously promised to repeal the Vagrancy Act, once it had found a suitable replacement.
