The Economy Minister pointed to the 'steady reduction' in Stormont budgets during more than a decade of Tory government

Tory austerity and a lack of political will are to blame for the failure to expand the Ulster University Magee campus in Derry in recent years, Economy Minister Conor Murphy has suggested.

The taskforce announced by Mr Murphy on Friday is expected to deliver a report in 2024 that will outline the best way to reach the 10,000 student target - a move that would represent an expansion of Magee by around a third. He continued: "We still have a financially challenging situation. We hope that improves. The executive has set us an objective to get us onto the right fiscal footing so we are actually funded according to our needs, not as it currently is below the level of our needs.

Stephen Kelly, Chief Executive of Manufacturing NI, has been appointed Chair of the taskforce and Nicola Skelly, Executive Director of the Washington Ireland Program, as Vice Chair. Membership of the taskforce will consist of representatives from a range of organisations in higher education, business, the trade union movement, the voluntary and community sector, government and local government.
