The fantastical world the ground-floor flat's tenant created wasn't discovered until after his death in 2019
From the outside, it appears to be a typical suburban home. However, this house on an ordinary street in Oxton, Wirral, just an hour's drive from Manchester city centre, hides a unique secret that remained hidden for three decades.
A reserved man, Ron had covered every inch of his flat with incredible displays which range from a Minotaur fireplace to a giant painting of Cleopatra. His artwork was almost entirely unknown before his death in September 2019, with only around a dozen people being aware of the beauty on display inside the seemingly innocuous flat.Read today's top Manchester Evening News stories
It is believed that Ron's fascination with the ancient world was sparked by a childhood trip to Pompeii. He passed away in September 2019, just shy of his 80th birthday.Despite always exhibiting peculiar behaviour, his eccentricity escalated in his later years, according to the Liverpool Echo.
In March 2023 the Wirral Arts & Culture Community Land Trust bought the flat at auction. The WACCLT was formed following the discovery of Ron's flat with the mission to preserve it in the way Ron intended.Historic England soon saw the unique value in Ron’s artwork, believing it deserved to be added to the National Heritage List for England.
