Mike Mignola- Drawing Monsters Directors On Making A Hellboy Documentary For Everyone
Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters charts the rise of one of the most iconic modern comic creators. Often defined by the character of Hellboy, Mike Mignola is a prolific and storied artist who began his career at Marvel Comics, contributed to Disney’s 2001 film Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and has created his own comic continuity that extends far beyond his signature demon.
Kevin Konrad Hanna & Jim Demonakos Discuss Wanting To Make A Comic Book Documentary The Right Way “There Are A Few Out There—They’re Not Terribly Well Put Together” Screen Rant: Kevin, you've done a lot of animation and worked in video games, and Jim, it seems like you've spent a lot of time uplifting the works of comic creators.
Kevin Konrad Hanna: You definitely know there's stuff that he's annoyed by, and he'll tell you straight up. We wanted to get at truth and there were things that we were genuinely interested in asking him about, but I wouldn't feel great if somebody just pulled me aside and said, “Hey, let me talk to you about the darkest moment of your life.” We talked about the death of his mother, and we approached that with seriousness.
Demonakos Shares His Thoughts On Mike Mignola’s Style & Self-Deprecation “He Knows Exactly What He Wants To Draw, And What He Likes” One of my favorite parts of the documentary is how you explored the way Mike’s style came together. about how he doesn’t know how to draw a car that feels . How did you take him talking about his own skills in that way?
Jim Demonakos: It was a lot of restraint. Our first cut of the film was real boring. It was like two hours plus. You’d watch it and there were some good parts and some parts where it was just like, “Oh man. Why is this so draggy?” We realized we had a whole section that was probably maybe four minutes but felt like 20 minutes because it was people talking about their favorite Mignola characters.
Jim Demonakos: The short answer is yes, but not to the scale . My ideal consumption of the Mignolaverse is obviously the comics, but if it were to be translated… to me, BPRD is an X-Files show. It’s a team of people who investigate weird stuff, and you can have an overarching story arc. I would love to see that as a weekly Netflix or show.
