Mike Flanagan redeemed a 1999 critical failure.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The success of filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s 2018 Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House made up for an infamously bad horror movie misfire that arrived almost two decades earlier. The Netflix series is inspired by Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House, an iconic work of horror literature and one of the most influential entries into the psychological horror subgenre.

The uncertainty of whether characters were actually being haunted was an aspect that legendary horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan did justice to while adapting and expanding The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix in 2018. Flanagan’s emotionally charged retelling of the classic horror novel recast its heroes as a dysfunctional family, but The Haunting of Hill House held onto the unsettling interiority of Jackson’s writing.

1999’s The Haunting stuck to Jackson’s source novel at first, with dull opening scenes that followed a group of mismatched individuals who all partook in a scientific study by staying in a supposedly haunted house together. Almost immediately, the remake went off the rails, with Owen Wilson and Catherine Zeta-Jones turning in some of the hammiest, most broadly comedic performances of their careers.

Why The Haunting 1999 Had Such Terrible Reviews The Haunting fell to pieces in earnest when the remake attempted to explain the supernatural events seen in the novel. Where Jackson left any potentially supernatural aspects of the story strictly ambiguous, The Haunting featured an absurd finale wherein Wilson’s head was chopped off by a fireplace before the heroine battled a gigantic CGI blob.
