Microsoft president brad Smith says the company will follow Amazon and IBM in move on facial recognition.

“We will not sell facial recognition technology to police departments in the United States until we have a national law in place, grounded in human rights, that will govern this technology,” Smith said. “The bottom line for us is to protect the human rights of people as this technology is deployed.”

It’s unclear how much surveillance business Microsoft was doing with police in the first place. Smith said that it hadn’t sold facial recognition to police. He added that the company plans to implement “review factors” that would “go even beyond what we already have” to prevent abuse of the tech.
