Whatever happened after the Donegal defeat, Derry have lost their focus. A lot of the blame needs to lie at the door of management.
It's a week since I sat down to watch Galway v Derry, and I was curious to see how the latter would react to their defeat to Donegal. They started well, looking to be doing exactly what was needed - get over Galway and get the show back on the road. Then I was watching Ciaran McFaul lash out. He was lucky enough to just get a yellow and I was thinking 'what's that about?'
Whatever happened in that six week block after the Donegal defeat - be it injuries, the nature of the training, or something else - but they’ve lost their focus. A lot of the blame needs to lie at the door of management. You don’t do stuff like McKinless did at that stage of the game if everyone has bought into the process.
Jim McGuinness could have let it lie as the season was over and it had no impact on the result. But he tore shreds off me for letting the team, the county and myself down. He did the same to Rory Kavanagh after he got a needless red card in a Division Two final. We were left under no illusions that such a loss of discipline was unacceptable.
What of Harte and Devlin's own county? Tyrone coming to Ballybofey for a Championship battle? We've been down this road so often, is there any fresh angle to examine these two great rivals? That caught out teams in Ulster but, if both Armagh and Tyrone get another shot at it, then they’ll work it out,
