Whether or not the GOP candidate advances makes all the difference how the likely Nov. 7 runoff shapes up
Much of the focus of Tuesday’s special election to fill an open county supervisor seat has been on the Democratic candidates, Janessa Goldbeck and Monica Montgomery Steppe.
A fall faceoff between San Diego City Councilmember Montgomery Steppe and military veterans advocate Goldbeck would promise to be a high-octane, closely contested campaign. Hardly anyone thinks that would be the case if one of them runs against Reichert. The demographics and dynamics are stacked against her, even if she can see a path to victory.Reichert has separated herself from other candidates by running on, or rather against, certain populist, quality-of-life concerns.
In mailers and forums, Reichert also has repeatedly stressed her opposition to a law passed as state Senate Bill 10, which could allow as many as 12 housing units on current single-family zoned lots, depending on their proximity to transit stops.a local version of SB 10 proposed by Mayor Todd Gloria amid considerable public opposition.
While Goldbeck and especially Montgomery Steppe have been hit by negative ads from independent committees, it appears no one had taken a hard swing at Reichert as of Thursday. There are about two and a half times the number of Democratic registered voters as registered Republicans, who are also outnumbered by voters who decline to state a party preference.
