Mets slugger couldn't catch a break against Phillies on Sunday
Mets designate hitter J.D. Martinez ran into some really bad luck against the Phillies on Saturday and Sunday. designated hitter J.D. Martinez can’t catch a break these days. Mired in a slump in the second half of the season, the three-time Silver Slugger appears to be coming out of it — sans the luck.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza points to three of those seven at-bats that point to Martinez simply hitting into bad luck. Martinez’s batted ball had an expected batting average of .760 and would have been a home run in 18 of 30 ballparks, according to Statcast. It also represented the tying run in the Mets’ 6-4 loss on Saturday.
On his next at-bat, the loud 44,786 fans in attendance in South Philadelphia suddenly fell silent as he smoked a ball 399 feet to center field. This ball would have been a home run in eight big league ballparks, but not Citizens Bank Park. Despite having a 104.5 mph exit velocity and a .880 xBA, Martinez’s flyball also fell for an out.
