Steve Rotheram elaborated after suggesting trams could be reintroduced to the city under a Labour government
Earlier this week, Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram suggested that plans for a tram network across Liverpool could be looked at again if transport funding was made available under a future Labour government. Previous plans to bring trams back to Liverpool after decades have been unsuccessful, with the much publicised Merseytram plans scrapped 12 years after they were first proposed.
“We spent the money on rails but when we ended up selling them, we didn’t even get the money for them. We ended up fighting each other and lost the opportunity to steal a march on Manchester." Mr Rotheram said: "If we could get something going, that'd be brilliant, but there are no proposals at this moment in time for trams in the Liverpool City region, and we'd have to start again looking at whether there's room for them to and areas for them to be put into sometimes it can take like five, six, seven, 10 years to do that.
"I think everybody would love a tram. When you go abroad and you see a tram system it animates the place. I just think how wonderful it would be to see that.
