Merrionette Park, population 2,000, will ask voters in April whether to move to hire full-time police or contract with the Cook County sheriff's office for increased patrols.
Merrionette Park is putting two advisory referendums on the April 4 ballot regarding policing, including possibly hiring full-time officers.
Palcu said the department has about 20 part-time employees and said it has become increasingly difficult to find officers. “A lot of departments are offering more money and benefits,” he said. “It seems to be everybody is having issues.” Palcu said should the village look to hire full-time officers, there would not be any affect on the department’s budget, and it’s likely those full-time positions would be filled by some current part-time officers.He said if the village moves forward with full-time officers, there would continue to be a mix of full- and part-time patrol officers, but having four full-time cops would enable to the department to have one full-time officer for each shift.
