Christian Walker hit a two-run homer, Merrill Kelly pitched seven stellar innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 on Thursday night.
The Diamondbacks beat up on Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff, scoring five times off him in 5 2/3 innings. All of the damage came with two out: a two-run homer by Christian Walker in the first, an RBI single from Geraldo Perdomo in the second and a two-run Josh Rojas double that clanged off the overhang in the sixth.
But perhaps the most notable accomplishment was the zero in the first. On Saturday in Chicago, Kelly gave up three runs in the first inning to the White Sox but managed to pitch into the eighth. Six days earlier, he had allowed another three-spot in the first to the St. Louis Cardinals but nothing over his next five innings.
“I’ll take it,” Kelly said. “Anytime I can get a scoreless first, no matter how ugly or bad I feel in it, I’ll definitely take it. I would like to be able to find a way to get in that rhythm a little faster than I have been.” “Honestly, I don’t know,” he said when asked where he’ll go from here. “I definitely recognize the feeling that I have that’s different between the first inning and the third inning. I guess the best thing for me to do is to try to feel that way out of the jump rather than in the third. I’m not sure how, exactly, I’m going to get there, but I know the feeling that I want.”
