to rebuild the 10,000-square-foot building, with a projected completion date of summer 2024 and estimated cost of $2.6 million.“The Precinct 3 engineering team did what they do best by maintaining the integrity and history of the original 1986 visitor center while also incorporating technology and design updates to meet today’s standards,” Pct. 3 Commissioner Tom S. Ramsey said in a statement.
“This Friday , we will host two ballerinas from the University of Houston who will be giving a free performance of the ‘Dance of the Insects’,” said Christy Jones, education director for Mercer Botanic Gardens. The park has long been divided east from west by Aldine Westfield Road and now the newly redrawn precinct lines divide the east Mercer Botanic Gardens into Pct. 3 and the west side Mercer Arboretum into Pct. 1. The combined area is more than 1,000 acres of continuous land. Only about 60-acres of it are intensely cultivated.
The herbarium has more than 52,000 curated plant specimens preserved for future generations of researchers, scientists, artists, and citizens.
