There were some pretty unconventional solutions being pitched and marketed at the 'Ohio School Safety Summit' to protect schools from mass shootings.

Hundreds of students and staff members have died or been injured in those shootings; thousands have been exposed to the violence.Outside the conference Tuesday stood TG Cook, a former police officer who now sells “comprehensive school lockdown systems” with The Lockout Company, of Michigan. He explained that tactical minds consider schools to be “soft” targets in that they’re unlocked most the day.

Cook said the company is already in schools around Ohio. It costs about $1,800 per classroom. The company gives recommendations but works with schools’ budgets and helps coordinate grants. The goal, he said, is to protect the kids. “We do an assessment for each school or building and we’ll look at areas, we’ll look at your access controls, we’ll decide what level of protection do you need on each area of glass,” he said.
