“I was just so excited for her. I thought it was such a great opportunity. I told her not to think about it, because she was worried about upsetting me that they were gonna have to cancel the trip,” Jacob said.
Less than a decade ago, Tart oversaw the University of Houston’s nursing program’s move to the school system’s flagship location. “People have asked me if I would do this again, and I’ve said no. Because you have to be patient,” Tart said. “You have to be committed. And I don’t mean to say that that’s hard, but if people cannot be committed then they should not start nursing programs.”Weston and her family last stood outside the Gibson D. Lewis Health Science Library on HSC’s campus in July 2016, braving the Texas sun for a few photos with Jacob in his white coat and stethoscope for the first time.
Gene and Martha Hamilton, Weston’s parents and Jacob’s grandparents, traveled to Fort Worth just to watch Jacob’s white coat ceremony. The jacket, which is much shorter than the traditional white coat worn by doctors, celebrates the work required to get into medical school and looks ahead to the years of learning still to come.
