Ewan McGregor revealed how Alec Guinness inspired his performance as ObiWanKenobi 'I always have him in my mind when I’m playing the role. I like to hear his voice when I’m saying the lines.'
Actor Ewan McGregor comments on how original Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Alec Guinness influences his performance in the upcoming show. Guinness was the Oscar-winning actor of David Lean's 1957 masterpiece The Bridge on the River Kwai, as well as Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. At the age of 63, Guinness played the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' original Star Wars trilogy, starting in 1977.
McGregor was hired to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, beginning with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 1999. McGregor was 28 years old when he started with the franchise, playing the part of Obi-Wan for two more films in the series, which closed out in 2005 with Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Since then, McGregor has always said that he'd be open to playing Obi-Wan again, and the character's voice was heard in the sequel trilogy.
I’m totally affected by him in everything I do. Since I did the first prequel, it’s been this case. I always think about him. I didn’t know Alec and I never got a chance to meet him. I’m an absolute fan-he was really one of Britain’s premier actors of all time. He’s really an extraordinary talent and to have any sort of link to him is an amazing privilege for me. So, I always have him in my mind when I’m playing the role. I like to hear his voice when I’m saying the lines.
Guinness appeared in each chapter of the original trilogy, playing the Force Ghost of Obi-Wan in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, before passing away in 2000. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will pick up a decade after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which will have McGregor playing the character closer to the time audiences meet him in A New Hope, when Guinness portrayed the character.
It's interesting that Guinness had such a tug-of-war relationship with the role of Obi-Wan, which frequently becomes a challenge for stars of the Star Wars franchise, as it's such a globally-recognized brand that's difficult to separate from. However, it's ultimately a testament to the gravitas that Guinness brought to the role, being an established, classically-trained actor who helped sell the often corny dialogue and created an iconic and memorable character.
