Max Verstappen closes 2022 with Abu Dhabi win.
The 2022 season started with Max Verstappen retiring out of two of the year's first three races, allowing Charles Leclerc to build a substantial early lead in the championship and seemingly opening up the door for a massive season for the young Ferrari driver. Verstappen responded with a dominant Summer, stringing together a total of 14 wins over the year's first 21 races to take a commanding lead and never look back.
Max Verstappen started on pole and led throughout the day, taking a relatively easy win and shifting the focus to the battle for second in the race and championship. Leclerc and Sergio Perez entered the race tied after, so the higher-finishing driver of the two would effectively win the battle no matter where in the top ten they finished.
After a season highlighted by confounding tire decisions that cost the team wins, Ferrari's strategists nailed the team's final choice of the year. While Perez ran a traditional two-stop strategy, Leclerc chose to stop just once. His lead on Perez was 15 seconds with 20 laps to go, but he was able to preserve his tires long enough to keep that lead around 5 seconds with 5 laps to go.
Carlos Sainz, George Russell, Lando Norris, Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, Daniel Ricciardo, and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the points-scoring positions. Vettel, in his final race, moved up into the points when Lewis Hamilton retired with a late transmission failure; he almost ended his career on a highlight, catching Ricciardo on the final lap and pressuring him for a position that would have earned Aston Martin another spot in the constructor's standings.
With 2022 Formula 1 season over, attention now turns to 2023. The traditional end-of-season tests this week mark the beginning of an ever-shorter offseason, with teams getting just over three months off before racing returns in the first weekend of March. That will be an astonishing 24-race season, the longest in the history of the sport.
