Officials celebrated the opening of a new South Suburban Humane Society in Matteson with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
. It includes a grassy field and pond, with walking spaces for volunteers and pets, a modern building, an enclosed area known as the “catio” and low-cost veterinarian services for Cook County residents. SSHS is open to surrenders as well as animal control pickups.
At one point, that new beginning was but an idea. Klehm said Matteson police Chief Mike Jones planted the seed by asking if she ever thought about putting a shelter in the village. She had not. The shelter cares for approximately 3,500 animals annually, according to a new release from the county. The hope is that the attention and resources that come with the new easy-to-find location will attract more donations, foster families and adoptions — and faster than they were happening at the old facility, Klehm said.
