The maternity unit at Causeway Hospital in Coleraine was closed in July
The closure of maternity services at a Co Derry hospital and transfer to Antrim has been done "safely and effectively", a Northern Ireland health chief has insisted.
The decision to close the unit was announced by the Northern Trust in March and took effect in July despite opposition from the Causeway SOS campaign group, who staged several public protests in Coleraine. In the period from July to December last year, a total of seven babies were born before arrival at Antrim Area Hospital.
She continued: “Change is not always easy, and we recognise this was a very emotive issue, not just for our service users and community, but for our staff too. While it is still early days, I am really pleased at how our teams have adapted and embraced the new model. I’m also encouraged by the feedback from women in our care which has been largely very positive."
