The meeting comes amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in China, where residents are living under a strict 'zero-COVID' policy.

Xi's government has adopted a strict zero-COVID policy. Bloomberg reported Friday that the leader greeted Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who was also not wearing a mask, in person and revealed a hope to"deepen trust" between their respective countries.

The meeting comes as Beijing undergoes lockdowns due to a surge in COVID cases. Certain schools have been forced to close at the same time that citizens have been instructed not to leave the city. Thursday, China faced a record spike in daily infections, with the country's tally shooting to nearly 32,000 new cases. Beijing, meanwhile, had counted more than 1,800 cases alone.
