The Montgomery County public school district joined two other state school districts in a federal lawsuit against social media companies like TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook.
MCPS, with its 160,550 students in 210 schools, believes social media is fueling body dissatisfaction, eating disorders and low self-esteem among children and students.
And they have algorithms that tend to addict them to keep coming back for more and more. And it’s leading to violence, it’s leading to issues at school of vandalism and overall it’s just degrading the students' environment for learning in school,” said James Frantz, lead trial counsel and CEO of Frantz Law Group.
Local school leaders have acted just in time for the last day of school Friday in Montgomery County. 500 school districts across the United States and close to 2,000 schools represented in the litigation are involved in the suit that accuses the companies of “knowingly causing emotional harm” to children through their platforms.
