Chicago’s 2004 marathon was my “first one.” A true novice, I had no running group, no running friends, no experience from which to draw. Runner’s World magazine was my coach: training plans, gear reviews, nutrition advice, race day tips. When the day arrived in 2004, I overslept, didn’t know where to park, couldn’t find the gear check and was poorly dressed — I shivered while waiting for the start. I didn’t know to bring an outer layer I could ditch when the race began.

I can’t find the type of socks I’ve always raced in. I wonder if a casual sniffle is an evil portent of a far greater sickness. I forgot to get the Tylenol PM!
