The news follows announcements from Zuckerberg in a Facebook post on Tuesday about the different ways that the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as well as Facebook itself, are working to combat the coronavirus outbreak. In the post, Zuckerberg said CZI, cofounded with his wife, Priscilla Chan, had partnered with Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates’ foundation and researchers in Cambodia sequenced the full genome of the virus that causes coronavirus.

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, a team within CZI that brings together scientists and engineers to fight all disease, has been working on a cell atlas — a mapping of different cell types in the human body, including cells in the lung. Zuckerberg said researchers are using this to investigate how to limit lung damage and address symptoms of coronavirus. on the planet within the Facebook executive’s children’s lifetimes.

As the world races to contain the virus itself, as well as misinformation around the virus, the markets have felt the burn. Facebook’s stock in the last month has lost nearly 11% of its value. Zuckeberg, cofounder and CEO of Facebook, retains a net worth of $69.5 billion. In December 2015, he made a pledge to give away 99% of his Facebook stake over his lifetime to charity.

As for what efforts Facebook is making, Zuckerberg said the social network will remove “false claims and conspiracy theories that have been flagged by global health organizations” as well as “blocking people from running ads that try to exploit the situation — for example, claiming that their product can cure disease.”

In the past, Facebook has made efforts to ban ads that contain misinformation especially around health, but it has sometimes beenZuckerberg also disclosed that researchers are using aggregated and anonymized Facebook data, such as mobility data and population density maps, to track how the virus is spreading.
