The Jaguars are asking for an unprecedented amount from the city of Jacksonville for their shiny, spectacular 'stadium of the future.'

I have no doubt there are architects and engineers who can make this happen. If you look around America, there are plenty of examples of stunning sports facilities. We’ve finally seen a price tag.The Jaguars are estimating $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion for the renovations, with the city covering 67 percent of the cost — or $800 million to $934 million.

What they probably won’t note is that no American city has ever committed this much in public money to a stadium. Not that this figure is a surprise. The NFL stadium spending bar keeps soaring higher and higher, the minimum acceptable standards for a sports venue — or at least as deemed by the league and its 32 teams — becoming more and more extravagant. The most profitable sports league in America plays its games in some of the most expensive stadiums in the world.

When the Jaguars entered the league in 1995, stadiums were being built for $200 million. Now, even if you calculate for inflation, the cost of having an NFL stadium in your town now is many times that. And the payoff? That’s complicated, maybe as much about intangible and emotional impacts as economic ones.is worth more than $12 billion and owns a team that has quadrupled in value since he bought it, let him renovate the stadium himself.
