March Madness shows how NIL money and the transfer portal are starting to reshape the balance of power in college sports
While schools have varying levels of involvement in NIL activities, due to NCAA rules and their own appetites for permitting such deals, those that have opened doors for student-athletes to do more with NIL seem to be gaining ground this March Madness — though experts said it's too early to tell the long-term impact on the power balance in college sports.
"It's really hard to come to that conclusion, particularly so soon after July 1, 2021," said Darren Heitner, a top NIL sports lawyer, referring to the date of the."We're starting to see signs of NIL reshaping the balance of power, but it's going to take time." Heitner pointed to Florida Atlantic University, a Division I team in the men's Final Four that only recently got an NIL collective and whose basketball players had"minimal NIL" before the season, asMany NIL collectives have publicly stated goals of recruiting and retaining top talent,, which tracks NIL activity. That can mean preparing lucrative financial packages to attract the best players. But it's not all about the money.
"It's become a recruiting advantage to be a school that's more permissive with NIL activities," said Kristi Dosh, a consultant and writer who founded the site BusinessofCollegeSports.com.
