Baylor is the first No. 1 seed out of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament after North Carolina pulled off the upset with a 93-86 overtime win on Saturday
Baylor very nearly completed the biggest comeback in NCAA tournament history, erasing a 25-point lead in the game’s final 10 minutes. The No. 8 Tar Heels led for much of the afternoon but saw their momentum slowly fade as they ran into foul trouble and Baylor turned up the desperation and intensity.
Senior forward Brady Manek, a force for the Tar Heels all game, was disqualified by a flagrant foul midway through the second half. Sophomore guard Caleb Love fouled out a few minutes later and UNC started to unravel from there. James Akinjo’s and-one cut the Tar Heels’ lead to just three with under two minutes remaining. North Carolina senior Armando Bacot responded with four straight points to keep his team in slight control. With 30 seconds remaining, Baylor freshman Jeremy Sochan banked in a three to keep his team in the game. Bacot missed two free throws, giving Baylor a chance to tie. Akinjo did so with another and-one, tying the game at 80 with 15 seconds left.
Out of a timeout, sophomore guard RJ Davis attempted a buzzer-beating three from the top of the key but it clanged off the front rim.
