Mar Vista High outlasts Army-Navy to reach Division V semifinals, still with a shot to win their first San Diego Section football crown
The Mariners, the No. 5 seed in the San Diego Section Division V quarterfinals, need one more victory to reach their first CIF football championship game in school history after outlasting No. 4 Army-Navy 40-35 on Friday night.
After a series of turnovers, Utu Fataki’s 56-yard interception return with 9:14 left in the second quarter gave the Warriors their first lead at 14-7. Army-Navy took advantage of a punt return and a Mar Vista penalty to start a drive from the Mariners’ 16. Mar Vista lost Andrew Urquizu, an offensive tackle, to an injury on the final play of the first half that required an ambulance to take him off the field.
