Shoplifting has hit a record high as thieves steal “without fear of apprehension” in Merseyside
Our new interactive map shows the areas of Merseyside with the highest levels of shoplifting. In Merseyside police recorded 8,523 crimes of shoplifting last year, which was a 14% increase on 7,470 offences in the year ending March 2023 and the highest in five years. The biggest increase in shoplifting was seen in Liverpool , where there were 4,220 reported crimes last year, a 26% rise from 3,349 offences. That was followed by St Helens , where shoplifting increased by 16%.
” It will also be a separate offence for assaulting a shop-worker. James Lowman, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, said: “The gangs that are committing the majority of these crimes against retailers are typically organised, stealing to fund other criminal activity or drug and alcohol habits.
