It didn't take long for Penn State players to buy into the ex-Miami coach's philosophies. Can Diaz help James Franklin get to the Playoff?
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The first time players met Manny Diaz, many weren’t sure what to make of their defensive coordinator. The man with the slicked-back dark hair was tough to read. His face was stern and his gaze sharp as he observed the Nittany Lions’ defense in December 2021 in the lead-up to the Outback Bowl. There was a mysteriousness to him that nearly two years later still keeps some of his players on their toes. Advertisement “It’s hard to tell with him sometimes,” defensive end said.
At the same time, Franklin knew his defensive players had questions about who would replace Brent Pry, who followed Franklin from Vanderbilt. When Pry left in November 2021 to become head coach at , he wasn’t just any coordinator, but rather the person on staff who had been with Franklin long enough to know him better than anyone else. He was a confidant and a friend. “When he left, that was hard,” Franklin said.
