Silvana was the place generations of parents took their kids to buy clothes
Generations of kids will remember being taken by their mum or dad to Silvana in Ancoats. Based in an old mill on Piercy Street, the fashion retailer cut out the middle man by selling its clothes direct to the customer.
This led to his decision to create Silvana, which sold direct from the mill and even had its own dedicated free bus from outside C&A on Oldham Street - the very store that rejected his goods. And from the 1950s, Silvana's in Ancoats became synonymous with supplying clothes to Mancunians, in particular warm winter coats and best clothes for Whit Walks.
Freda Andrews, posted: "Oh yes! The place to go for coats. Got a navy blue cord trouser suit when I was 12 or 13. And a maroon leather coat - very '60s."Norma Hallsworth Payton, said: "Went here for my winter coats. Remember having arguments with my mum about what I liked and what she wanted me to have, lol."
Other memories people shared included being terrified of the "rickety old lift" which "juddered and swayed". The lift was needed to travel up to the clothing floor of the old mill which had what seemed to be "miles of racks containing thousands of coats." But the good times didn't last.
