On the day when Man Utd lost one of its greats in Sir Bobby Charlton, the current crop showed their fight and determination to earn a scrappy win against Sheffield United.
There's no doubt Sir Bobby Charlton was one of the greatest footballers ever to play for Manchester United, but for all his elegant and destructive brilliance, he was a fighter too, and in that sense, the team he became synonymous with showed similar traits at Bramall Lane on Saturday to pay their own tribute.
In stylistic terms, they hardly achieved that. Much like Brentford, this was another display that didn't convince, but again they did find a way to win, despite a particularly poor start. A passive start wasn't what was expected from United given the emotion involved in the night after Charlton's death. 'There's only one Bobby Charlton' echoed out from the away 15 minutes before kick-off and Scott McTominay urged his teammates pre-match to "do it for Sir Bobby" and Ten Hag called him a "giant". A description nobody can disagree with.
When Fernandes drilled a high pass into him, there was nothing on, but McTominay controlled it brilliantly and finished smartly. It felt like the stars were aligning for an academy graduate to be the hero on this most fitting of days.
