The pedestrian was walking outside of a crosswalk in lanes of Vermont Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound.

A 52-year-old man was struck and killed while walking on a Harbor Gateway street Thursday night, Aug. 10, with the driver detained for questioning, authorities said.

Los Angeles officers responded about 10:30 p.m. to the area of Vermont and Knox avenues, just south of the 405 Freeway, and found the man lying in the roadway, Officer Melissa Podany said. The man, who was possibly homeless, died at the scene, Podany said. He was walking outside of a crosswalk when struck by the vehicle traveling northbound on Vermont.

The 42-year-old driver stopped after the collision, Podany said. Whether he was arrested was unclear. The SUV suffered major passenger-side front-end damage and a shattered windshield and ended up on a sidewalk, video by RMG News, a news organization that sometimes works with the Southern California News Group, shows. The pedestrian’s identity was withheld by police pending notification of his relatives.
