An Arizona man admitted in federal court in Riverside on Monday, May 15, that he committed ain 2022 that ended when he accidentally shot himself at the end of a police pursuit, the U.S. Justice Department said.
Smith faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 17 years in federal prison and up to life in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 22 by Judge Jesus G. Bernal. After Smith robbed the Rancho Cucamonga PetSmart, stealing $400, he was confronted by police officers and federal agents. Smith shot at the officers and drove away. Smith fired at officers during a high-speed chase that ended when officers rammed Smith’s car.
