Mark Jessamine, who suffered from PTSD after a motorbike accident, has found solace and regained confidence by volunteering at a charity shop. Despite his double vision and occasional struggles with PTSD, Mark has become an integral part of the shop, serving customers and running the store.
A man who was left with post-traumatic stress disorder after a horrific motorbike accident has overcome his condition after volunteering at his local charity shop. Mark Jessamine, 45, from Stapleford, experienced two bleeds in the brain and was left with PTSD and double vision after a car collided head on with the motorbike he was riding.
Meanwhile, volunteering in the Sense shop has hugely boosted his confidence because he enjoys the job, does not feel judged, and can work at his own pace. “I wanted to volunteer to try to get me out of the house and picked Sense because it was a good atmosphere. In the shop, I don’t feel judged and I don’t have to do everything at 100mph – I can take my time and enjoy it.
“Being shortlisted for a Sense Award has given me a boost. It’s made me feel really good and wanted at the shop.”
