Connor McKenna-West, 25, and his fiancé Carl had planned an event for family and friends at their home in Middlesbrough on Sunday. The couple enjoyed the home display and kept aside a few remaining fireworks to enjoy with their immediate family at the end of the evening.
Connor said: "They weren't under the counter fireworks, they were legitimate fireworks, but I've gone to light the rocket off and I don't even know whether the fuse lit or not, but the rocket has literally blown up in my face. "It hadn't even taken off to go into the air, it instantly exploded in my face. I've had a big piece of the rocket go through the right hand side of my eyelid and it's gone all the way through, shattered my eyeball and I had to have the eye removed in surgery."
