Raheem Jacobs, 33, of Bridgeton, was found guilty on May 26 of reckless manslaughter after a two-and-a-half week trial, the office said. In addition to his prison term, Jacobs was ordered by Cumberland County Superior Court Judge Cristen P. D’Arrigo to pay restitution of $7,430 to the family of the victim, 28-year-old Bridgeton resident Keon Butler, to pay for his funeral expenses, officials said.
Butler was driving a minivan near the intersection of North Laurel and Myrtle streets on Aug. 11, 2015 when he was hit by a single shot to the head, the office said. The fatal shot was fired from another vehicle that had been following him. Jacobs was arrested in October 2015 and charged with multiple offenses but convicted only on the reckless manslaughter charge, authorities said. The jury found him not guilty of murder, aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.He must spend 17 years in prison before being eligible for parole, of which he must also serve three years once he is released.
